Frequently Asked Questions
Your quick guide to Ember & Bloom. My goal is to make your firing process smooth, flexible, and safe, so you can focus on creating. If you still have questions that weren't answered, feel free to contact me!
General Questions
Where are you located?
Ember & Bloom Studios is located in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs at 2132 E Bijou Street. Our studio is nestled inside a secure building, so we kindly ask that you schedule an appointment if you’d like to visit in person.
What cone do you fire to?
All glaze firings are Cone 6 oxidation unless otherwise arranged. Bisque is typically fired to Cone 04.
Do you accept pieces made outside Ember & Bloom?
Most of the work we fire is made outside the studio—that’s the whole point of Ember & Bloom! The only time I ask for extra approval is when someone wants to fire a piece made with a clay or glaze I haven’t seen before (like an old college pot or a mystery clay), and this will be a case by case basis. This helps make sure everything in the kiln is 100% safe, quality and compatible.
If you picked up your clay from me, you’re good to go. If you’re dusting off a pot you made years ago, or using a material you’re not totally sure about, just check in with me first.
Why aren't bags of clay included in the membership pricing?
Everyone works at a different pace! I didn’t want anyone to feel rushed or end up with more clay than they’re ready for. You can buy clay anytime you’re ready, at your own rhythm.
What if I'm not sure what clay or glaze to buy?
That’s what I’m here for! I love chatting about pottery anything & am happy to answer questions, share recommendations, and help you pick materials that work for you!
Is there a workspace I can use?
Not at this time. Ember & Bloom is a kiln firing center and supply shop only. Our focus is on helping you fire your work and access the materials you need.
Are there retail or shopping hours?
There aren’t set retail hours. Everything is designed to be ordered online for easy pickup or drop-off using your personal code. That said, I do work out of the studio often and when I’m there, I’ll post on social, and you’re welcome to stop by and shop in person.
How do I pick up my fired work or materials?
Once your firing or order is ready, you’ll get a notification. You can pick up anytime with your personal code. It's super flexible so it works on your schedule.
Is there a community space or events?
While we don’t have a shared work space, we do host occasional community events to connect potters and makers alike.
Do you offer classes?
Not at Ember & Bloom as we’re a firing and supply resource. That said, I do teach classes at Pike's Peak Artist Collective—and I’m also open to offering private 1:1 wheel sessions if you’re looking for some focused guidance. Feel free to reach out if that’s something you’d enjoy!
Firing Questions
How should I prepare my pots for firing?
Pieces should be completely bone dry for bisque, and glaze should be cleanly applied (no glaze on the bottoms, and wiped up 1/4 inch). Pieces that do not meet these requirements will not be fired.
If you’re ever unsure, I’m happy to answer questions or take a quick look before you load, better safe than sorry!
What happens if my piece breaks or damages the kiln?
Breaks happen sometimes, and most are no big deal. If something causes significant kiln damage (like a glaze run that fuses to the shelf), the maker is responsible for repair or replacement costs. I do my best to prevent this by checking pieces and offering guidance before they go in.
Can I test new glazes or techniques?
Yes, I encourage creativity and experimentation, with a little planning. If it’s a brand or combo I haven’t seen before, I suggest you to run a small test tile first. I also suggest putting your pieces on a kiln cookie, which we sell if you don't feel like making your own! This keeps the kiln safe and helps you avoid surprises on a big piece.
What if I'm not sure if my clay or glaze will work?
Just ask! I’d much rather talk it through than risk a kiln mishap. If your materials come from Ember & Bloom, you’re all set. If it’s something from outside, we can look at it together before firing.
